Aperi is located 8 km. northwest of the main city and it used to be the capital of the island till 1892. It is hidden behind the high mountains of Karpathos so that pirates would not notice it. It is a traditional village with few shops, cafes and taverns. The lush vegetation and the stream that divides the village in two make it one of the most beautiful villages of Karpathos. Even though the old mansions are trying to maintain their former glory, most of them are uninhabited or used as holiday homes. On the top of the mountain you can also see the ancient citadel of Karpathos.
